ITANAGAR: The All Arunachal Pradesh Students' Union (AAPSU) has said that Chakmas and Hajongs are refugees and have been temporarily settled in the state, and the people will never accept them as the indigenous people of the state.

Speaking to the reporters, Chakma & Hajong issue chairman and AAPSU vice-president Nabam Gandhi said the union would soon discuss the deportation of Chakmas and Hajongs as they are foreigners. If they were from other Indian states, Temporary Residential Certificate (TRC) could have been provided but both communities are not Indians.

Hence, issuing a Residential Proof Certificate (RPC) or any other form of residential proof to them is not acceptable. Also, there are no gazette notifications that state whether they are eligible for TRC or RPC.

"The recent protest by the Chakma and Hajong students' union in New Delhi demanding RPC is a clear indication that they are not indigenous. The indigenous should voice their rights in front of the state government, and not at the Centre," he said.

Also, he said that under the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019, there is a clear direction that these refugees cannot be settled in many states of the Northeast. The state government of Arunachal Pradesh has all rights to deport both communities, he added.

Gandhi also informed that the union would place the demand for the deportation of the Chakmas and Hajongs before the state government and a state-wide protest would also be conducted for the same and in response to the various allegations leveled against the union by the Chakma and Hajong student leaders.
