ITANAGAR: The All Puroik Students' Union (APSU) demanded that the State government must re-appoint members of Autonomous Puroik Welfare Board (APWB) at the earliest wherein its Chairman should be from the community as per Court order.

Addressing media persons at the Press Club here, APSU president Sipa Yachu said that the board members of APWB should be well qualified individuals and the chairman should be from the community. He further said that due to the lack of any knowledge about the Puriok community by a non community member as chairman of APWB has resulted in no community development.

"The previous Principal Secretary of the State had no grass-root information about the community but was appointed as chairman of the board," he said, adding unlike the previous tenure, the chairman of the board should not be replaced quite often.

The students' union has submitted a memorandum to the Governor and Chief Minister's Office (CMO) regarding the issue.

Disappointed over the functioning of APWB, Yachu said that the office of the board has remained closed without any functioning till date. He said that the union also demands to resume the office immediately with sufficient office staff.

He said that due to the non-functioning of APWB office, the board had not yet performed any development service to the community besides just formulating Generation Livelihood Activities scheme in the past three years.

Yachu also informed that there is no salary payment of Vice-Chairman (VC) and the board members, while demanding to restructure the system by including salary of those for proper functioning of APWB.

He said that despite the transfer order issued by the Chief Secretary Office in the month of June to appoint one Bopia Puriok as Director-cum-member Secretary of APWB, the nodal department is yet to act on the order.

"The nodal department claims that there is no such post in APWB. Due to which Bopia Puriok has not been appointed till date despite the transfer order" he said, while demanding immediate appointment as per the order.

The students' union also demanded disbursement of the sanctioned amount to the 120 Puroik beneficiaries of the 'Generation of Livelihood Activities' scheme under the APWB policies within November 2020.

The students' union claimed that less than 20 individuals only have received the fund till date.
