NAHARLAGUN: The Arunachal Pradesh State Commission for Women (APSCW) organized an awareness programme on menstrual hygiene to commemorate the World Menstrual Hygiene Day-2022 in collaboration with Oju Welfare Association (OWA) here on Saturday.

The programme was sponsored by the National Commission for Women (NCW), New Delhi.

Addressing the gathering, Vice-Chairperson APSCW Nabam Yahi Tad encouraged the participants to treat menstruation as a natural part of life and not as a taboo. Women should open up to talk about menstruation through an awareness programme.

Women should take discriminatory action over menstruation very seriously. Moreover, every person irrespective of gender should discuss the matter explicitly.

"During the monthly menstrual cycle, it's the women who suffer pain and discomfort due to biological change. Therefore, there should be intensive research on the policy to provide leave to women on menstruation days," she said, adding that the collective acceptance should be later tabled before state government consideration.

The resource person Dr Marinda Panggeng, who is a member of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) elaborated on menstrual hygiene through a PowerPoint presentation.

Meanwhile, Chairperson OWA Ratan proposed to the APSCW to recommend the state government establish sanitation facilities for women in market areas, schools and other important places.

The programme was attended by more than 50 inmates of OWA, Swadhar Grah and APSCW staff.

Sanitary pads were distributed to all the participants. Further, Women Helpline-181 run by OWA displayed a Nukkad Natak at Pachin Colony, Naharlagun under the aegis of NCW to spread awareness on menstrual hygiene and distributed sanitary pads.
