ITANAGAR: Expressing anguish over the horrifying incident of two women parading naked in violence-hit Manipur, the Arunachal Pradesh Youth Congress (APYC) staged a protest outside Rajiv Gandhi Bhawan here on Friday. The youth cadres of the grand old party also burned effigies of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh for their failure to protect the dignity of women and bring lasting peace to the northeastern state.

Hundreds of youth Congress volunteers holding placards and banners demanded the immediate resignation of the Prime Minister, Home Minister, and Chief Minister of Manipur for their failure to control the situation in the state even after more than two months. "The BJP government both at the centre and in the state failed to bring normalcy to the state. The PM remained silent for more than two months, though people in both hill and valley areas of Manipur have been suffering immensely. What was the centre doing?" APYC President Tarh Johny said while talking to reporters. We express our solidarity with the people of Manipur…. The entire northeast is with them, and we stand together since similar incidents can occur in any state of the region. Johny added that the PM, Home Minister, and Chief Minister should morally step down.

The 26-second video capturing the ordeal of the two tribal women a day after ethnic violence erupted in the northeastern state on May 3 stoked a nationwide outrage. But the horrific footage surfaced only on Wednesday and became viral after the internet ban was lifted. More than 160 people have lost their lives and several have been injured since ethnic violence broke out in the state on May 3, when a 'Tribal Solidarity March' was organised in the hill districts to protest against the Meitei community's demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status.
