ITANAGAR: A memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed between the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) and the Centre for Earth Sciences and Himalayan Studies to install automatic weather stations/automatic raingauge stations across Arunachal Pradesh. The MoU was signed by Science and Technology Secretary Repo Ronya and Scientist-G and Guwahati-based Regional Meteorological Centre head KN Mohan at Itanagar on Monday. The IMD will install 100 automatic weather stations (AWS) and automatic raingauge stations (ARS) with the help of the Centre for Earth Sciences and Himalayan Studies in Arunachal Pradesh.
IMD is also planning to install three X-band Doppler weather radars in the state. This will help in the enhancement of surface weather observations in the state. Also, weather forecasts with impact-based advisories will be issued for different users of the state. This will establish a mutually beneficial relationship based on scientific cooperation between the two parties in terms of training, knowledge transfers, data sharing, and other scientific research programmes. Union Earth Sciences Minister Kiren Rijiju said that the people of Arunachal will benefit from precise weather forecasts and warnings with the increase in meteorological observations in the state.
Science and Technology Minister Honchun Ngandam expressed happiness that the state will have an enhanced network of weather observations and assured all help from the state to IMD for executing the installation works of meteorological observatories.
Earlier, Centre for Earth Sciences and Himalayan Studies director Tana Tage said the MoU will have a long-term impact on the research activities for the societal benefits to be undertaken by them. Regional Meteorological Centre, Guwahati Scientist-F Dr Sanjay O’Neill Shaw said that as a part of the MoU, both organisations will carry out joint research and development in the field of meteorology and its allied subjects, knowledge transfers, and information and data sharing in areas of weather, extreme event monitoring, and forecasting to further the missions of their respective organisations.
