ITANAGAR: Along with the rest of the country, Arunachal Pradesh on Saturday joined the 'Har Ghar Tiranga' campaign, as the three-day exercise began to mark the 75th anniversary of India's Independence.

Chief Minister Pema Khandu attended a programme at Yarlung Village in the East Siang district of the state, the home to the state's great freedom fighter Matmur Jamoh.

Taking to Twitter, Khandu said, "Honoured to attend the #HarGhar Tiranga Programme at Yarlung village in East Siang district. Paid my homage to great freedom fighter of Arunachal Pradesh Matmur Jamoh at Matmur Jamoh Memorial and felicitated his family."

Matmur Jamoh killed the British officer Noel Williamson at Komsing village, while another band of his followers killed one Dr Gregorson at Pangi, both in East Siang district of Arunachal Pradesh, on March 31, 1911.

The village chief of Yagrung had at last avenged the humiliation he had suffered at the hands of Williamson two years before the twin strikes by the Adi warriors he led.

However, he died in obscurity and very few records were available of his last days at Cellular Jail, where he was sent after he surrendered, along with some others a few months later, unable to hide any longer in the face of an intense operation called the Abor Expedition of 1911-12.

"Sacrifice of our freedom fighters shall always inspire us," Khandu said in another tweet.

The chief minister also appealed to the people to join the Har Ghar Tiranga campaign.

"Let us hoist and display our National Flag from 13th to 15th August to celebrate #AzadiKaAmritMahotsav. Guided by Hon'ble PM Shri @narendramodi Ji's vision to invoke patriotism in all Indians, let us join the #HarGharTiranga campaign," Khandu tweeted.

Celebrations were also witnessed at Seppa Town, the headquarters of East Kameng district, where hundreds of people led by Environment and Forest Minister Mama Natung, organised a foot march carrying a 300 feet tricolour and chanting Vande Mataram.

State Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein also joined the event at Chongkham in the Namsai district.

"Participated in the morning prabhatpheri organised by @BJP4Arunachal Namsai Unit at Chongkham, Namsai and Mahadevpur as part of #HarGharTiranga campaign on the occasion of 75th years of India's Independence to create awareness among people to hoist the National Flag in every house," Mein informed in his official Twitter handle.

Reports of celebrations of the event were also available from other districts of the state where various ministers and MLAs participated.
