Itanagar: Pioneer of electronic media in Arunachal Pradesh and veteran journalist Taro Chatung passed away at Tomo Riba Institute of Health and Medical Science (TRIHMS) Saturday morning after prolonged illness, family sources informed.

He was 57 year old and is survived by his wife, three sons and a daughter.

His body was taken to his private residence at Mowb-II here and kept for some time for people to pay their last respect and after that brought to Arunachal Press Club before being taken to his native village at Ziro in Lower Subansiri district where his last rites would be performed on Sunday.

Without thinking of monitory gains, Chatung followed his passion and became one of the firsts to direct and produce a full-length feature film in Hindi.

With his ‘News & Views’ breaking all records in terms of viewership, he could be well called as the father of electronic media in Arunachal Pradesh.

The media fraternity of the state under the aegis of Arunachal Press Club, Arunachal Pradesh Union of Working Journalist (APUWJ) and Arunachal Electronic and Digital Media Association (AEDMA) expressed shock and grief over the demise of Chatung. The scribes paid their last respect to the departed soul at Press Club here.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Pema Khandu expressed grief and extended his condolences on the sad demise of Chatung.

“It breaks my heart to know Chatung sir is no more with us. We grew up hearing about him and watched him on ‘News & Views’ every evening through the week days on DDK Itanagar. It would be impossible to fill the void he has left behind as the omnipresent journalist,” Khandu said in a message.

The Chief Minister remembered his long acquaintance with Late Chatung and hailed him as a man of immense historical and political knowledge of the state, grounded, sincere, straightforward, honest and witty.

“What made Late Chatung sir stand out as human being was his extreme love and dedication for his chosen profession. He could go to any extent to extract the truth and present it before the public,” Khandu said.

He said Arunachal Pradesh will always be grateful to Late Taro Chatung, who despite landing up with a prestigious government job, chose media as his profession and become its pioneer in the state.

The Chief Minister offered prayers for eternal peace of the departed soul while extending solidarity with family members, relatives and the media fraternity of the state.
