ITANAGAR: A team of doctors at Tomo Riba Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (TRIHMS) conducted a rare surgery, the first in the state, on an eight-year-old boy on Monday. The cardiology team of the lone medical college in the state, comprising cardiologists Dr. Tony Ete and Dr. Rinchin Dorjee Megeji, Dr. Taje Lucy (assistant professor of anesthesia), and Dr. Doorick Ete (resident anaesthesia), achieved a significant medical milestone by successfully performing the first-ever device closure of Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA) on the boy from Roing in Lower Dibang Valley district.
Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA) is a persistent opening between the two major blood vessels leading from the heart. The heart problem is present from birth, which means it is a congenital heart defect. A small PDA often does not cause problems and might never need treatment. However, a large, untreated PDA can let oxygen-poor blood move the wrong way. This can weaken the heart muscle, causing heart failure and other complications. The doctors’ team expressed gratitude to the state government for its support in making the procedure a reality. They extended their heartfelt thanks to chief minister Pema Khandu and health minister Alo Libang for their support. Ete also extended special thanks to TRIHMS director Dr. Moji Jini for providing encouragement and motivation throughout the process. The team acknowledged the trust and faith placed in them by the patient and their attendants.
