Itanagar: The Arunachal Pradesh State Commission for Women (APSCW) extended appreciation to the Superintendent of Police Jimmy Chiram and his team for arresting the rape accused Lekh Ram Meena from Leh, Ladakh.

The APSCW also requested the Capital Police to immediately file a charge sheet so that justice is served to the victim and her family.

Besides, the Commission also requested the State Government to emphasize creating awareness among the general public, especially young girls on crimes against women and girl children.

Due to a lack of awareness of crimes like domestic violence, cybercrime, trafficking and others, young girls are being taken advantage of and becoming victims.

Further, the APSCW requests the general public to be vigilant and coordinate with the law-enforcing agency to prevent unfortunate events towards women and girl children in society.

Earlier, the Capital Women Police team led by Inspector P Taku, and Sub Inspector Rosy Singpho arrested the rape accused from Leh after 2 years of dogged investigation of an FIR no. 70/20 u/s 376/417/34 IPC dated 17/9/2020 was received from the victim on September 17, 2020, stating that she was raped by one LR Meena on the pretext of false promise to marry her.

Except for the name, profession and phone number (fake identity issued) of the alleged accused no information about the whereabouts was with the police. After a detailed investigation, Investigating Officer Sub Inspector R Singpho finally ascertained the identity of the accused in February 2022 as Lekh Ram Meena of Rajasthan.

He was on the constant move in Rajasthan and Leh, Ladakh area as he was with the paramilitary. The investigation was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and 2021.

However, after a week-long search operation, the capital police finally arrested the rape accused and brought him to the state.
