Itanagar: The Arunachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly Secretariat on Wednesday declared Khonsa West Assembly seat to have fallen vacant, exactly three months after the killing of incumbent MLA Tirong Aboh by suspected militants.

The Khonsa West MLA and 10 others, including his 20-year-old son, were gunned down in an ambush near Bogapani in Tirap district on May 21 last, two days ahead of counting of votes. Aboh, seeking re-election as an NPP candidate, emerged victorious in the April 11 assembly polls. “Consequent upon death of Tirong Aboh, MLA on May 21, the seat of Khonsa West constituency of the Arunachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly has fallen vacant,” stated a ‘notification’ issued by the Assembly Secretariat here.

With this, the bye-election to the said Assembly seat is due which is expected to be completed by the month of November by the poll body to fulfill its constitutional obligations.

“Normally, bye-polls are to be held within six months of a seat falling vacant,” informed sources said here. In the recently concluded elections, the ruling BJP has scored a resounding win by capturing 41 out of 60 Assembly seats, while the opposition Congress bagged four, PPA one and new entrants Janata Dal (United) and National People’s Party (NPP) won seven and five seats respectively, besides two independents.
