Awareness And Sensitization Programme On Child Rights Held

A CORRESPONDENT

ROING: An awareness and sensitization programme for higher secondary and secondary level students on child rights and protection, child abuse and drug abuse, Child Help Line (1098) and installation of complaint box was organized by the District Child Protection Unit under Department of Women and Child Development in collaboration with Department of Education, Department of Police and CHILDLINE Roing on Saturday at Government Higher Secondary School, Bolung.

The programme was attended 170 students and teachers of the school. Protection Officer N. Meto informed the students about the four board categories of Child Rights, i.e. Right to Survival, Right to Protection, Right to Development and Right to Participation and also shared information regarding the legal provision under JJ (CPC) Act, 2015 which deals with the two categories i.e Child in conflict with Law (CCL) and Child in need of care and protection (CNCP).

The Protection Officer also focused on the offences against children as per JJ (CPC) Act 2015 under various section such as prohibition on disclosure of identity of children, punishment for cruelty to child, employment of child for begging, giving intoxicating liquor or drugs to a child, using a child for peddling, carrying, supplying or smuggling any intoxication etc, exploitation of a child employee, adoption without procedures, sale and procurement of children, corporal punishment etc and highlighted on POCSO Act 2012, which is a gender neutral Act .

Coordinator of CHILDLINE, Ishaya Mili informed about 1098 (CHILDLINE) services. She advised the students that if they hear, listen or see any child abuse, child in trouble, child labour etc. they should contact the CHILDLINE 1098. She highlighted about the numbers of child rescue cases from different places in the district by the CHILDLINE team.

DA (DCPU) Tulien Dutta highlighted the importance of Complain box installation in the school to ensure children's safety. The students have been advised to drop a complaint in the box if they come across any kind of harassment, abuse etc. The complaints are to be heard and addressed by a committee headed by the Principal of the school concerned.
