BD Mishra Expresses Concern over opium cultivation in Lohit

Itanagar: Governor Brig (retd) Dr BD Mishra has expressed concern over large scale cultivation of opium in Lohit district of the State and suggested for “alternative livelihood for opium cultivators” programme.

The Governor who is on a two-day visit to the district accompanied by Chief Secretary Naresh Kumar, during a meeting with villagers on Thursday, said that alternative livelihood programme should be a continuous process till such cultivators en block shift to cardamom and other profitable horticultural avenues, a Raj Bhawan communique informed here on Friday.

Dr Mishra emphasised that for progress and development of the state, the government officials, gaon burahs, farmers and members of the society should ensure that there is honesty, accountability, responsibility, continuity, audit and where ever required mid-course correction in the implementation of all programmes, projects and schemes.

He advised that the government officials to be punctual and regularly meet the general public.

“They must make it point to go to field, site and ground for better understanding of the local problem and proper implementation of government programmes,” the Governor stressed.

He said that the State has ample opportunity and scope in the field of agriculture and its allied sector, which at present lies uncovered. It can be realised if the youth change their attitude and mindset and explore the sector with positivity and scientific approach.

“If we want development in the State, we must double the income of the agrarian community,” the Governor pointed out while suggesting for group farming for better returns.

The farmers and gaon burahs shared their problems and challenges with the Governor. Later in the evening, the Governor also interacted with officers of 82 Mountain Brigade, the communique added.
