Itanagar: In run-up to the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, Governor Brig (retd) Dr BD Mishra on Thursday participated in the “Swachhata Hi Seva Hai” programme on single-use “Plastic Free India” at Raj Bhavan, here.
On the occasion, the Governor released a documentary – Swachh Bharat Initiative at Raj Bhavan – which was screened on the occasion. The film is conceptualised by Governor’s wife Neelam Mishra.
The Governor’s wife felicitated the employees of Raj Bhavan who, have contributed shramdaan towards Swachh Bharat Mission with cloth bags and cash awards. She also distributed jute bags sponsored by state urban development department.
Speaking on the occasion, the Governor said that Swachh Bharat Abhiyan or cleanliness mission is an issue which has so appreciably been taken up by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
“The programme is for the welfare of the people, society and the nation,” he said and added that keeping one’s own place and the surroundings clean is a human obligation and social duty,” the Governor said.
Dr Mishra emphasised on changing the mindset of the people towards keeping the surroundings clean saying that it is not the duty of only the municipal workers, but a responsibility of every citizen of the State.
Stressing on segregation of household wastes, the Governor said that segregation is the first step and a mandatory step towards the single-use plastics – reduce, reuse and recycle. He urged upon the students and the youth to motivate their friends, peers, parents, and relatives for cleanliness.
Earlier, State nodal officer of Swachh Bharat Mission J Basar briefed on the programme.
Later, a demonstration of waste segregation procedure was conducted by officials of Itanagar Municipal Council and self help groups.
