DIYUN: The Arunachal Pradesh Chakma Students Union (APCSU) on Saturday urged the Mishmi Welfare Society (MWS) not to brand the entire Chakma community as criminals.

The statement of the Chakma students body has come after members of the MWS on Friday took out a rally in Tezu, condemning alleged harassment of the villagers of Kathan in Lohit district by some Chakma militants.

The APCSU, however, supported the demand for deployment of security personnel to ensure the safety and security of the villagers. Those alleged anti-social elements have no place in any community and religion. The Union also staunchly demanded that the police must immediately hunt down those alleged anti-social elements irrespective of their caste, creed or ethnic origin and book them as per law of the land who are creating problems for the villagers.

“There is no society free from the presence of criminal elements. At the same time, it doesn’t mean that all the members of a particular community are criminals. Therefore, it is wrong to tag the entire Chakma community as criminals because of a few misguided youths as the rally allegedly claimed”, said Drishya Muni Chakma, president of the APCSU in a press release.

The manner in the use of the words “Chakma militants” in the memorandum and banner of the MWS has the tendency to create confusion and brand the entire Chakma community as criminals, it added.
