NOMENCLATURE DEBATE OVER 'HILLS MIRI' VERSUS 'NYISHI'

A CORRESPONDENT

ITANAGAR: The ANYA (All Nyishi Youth Association) has said that the APSSB (Arunachal Pradesh Staff Selection Board) should not declare the results of the UDC examination unless it clarifies the reason behind the use of the term 'Hills Miri' instead of 'Nyishi' in one of the questions in the question paper, on Thursday.

The term 'Hills Miri' is being considered as derogatory as the term 'Dafla', which was earlier used for Nyishi. In the year 2008, the words 'Hills Miri' and 'Dafla' were constitutionally removed and commonly known as Nyishi. The APSSB in its question number 116 had mentioned the term as one of the answer options.

Speaking to the reporters, ANYA president Byabang Joram said that the union today visited the Chief Secretary office, however could not meet as the CS was out of the station and has been replaced by an in-charge.

He said that the Union met with the in charge. However, there will be another meeting with the regular CS, when he is back to the office, he added.

On August 3, members of the Union also visited the APSSB office and sought clarification from the Board on the ''blunder''. Accordingly, the APSSB Chairman had written a letter to the CS to bring out an amicable solution to the issue.

The students' union had demanded an apology from the APSSB and also demanded that the examination be re-conducted.

Joram specifically said that the Union has no intention to hurt the sentiments of students who appeared in the examination by demanding that the examination be re-conducted.

''However, I would also appeal to those students to understand the sentiments of the Nyishi community. We hope for an amicable solution," he added.

He also said that the Board should initiate an inquiry into the entire episode; and, accordingly find a permanent solution.

In another development, the APSSB has informed that the skill test for the examination has been postponed till further notice. It was was slated in Itanagar on August 8.
