Itanagar: The controversy over assassination of sitting Khonsa-West National People’s Party (NPP) MLA Tirong Aboh and 10 others, including his relatives near Khonsa, the headquarters of Tirap district on May 21 this year refuses to die down.
Ruling BJP candidate Phawang Lowang, who had contested against him in April Assembly election this year, has attributed to personal issue of Aboh for the murder but not political reason.
His clarification came as rumours describing the barbaric incident as political has been doing rounds in the State, particularly after Aboh was declared elected on May 23 last.
“I have not only strongly condemned assassination of Aboh with 10 others but had and urged the state governor in a memorandum to unearth the truth by initiating free and fair investigation. I have nothing to do with the assassination”, Lowang added.
Clarifying allegation of issuing a letter in the name of ‘Naga Army (Ollo)’ directing villagers to vote for him in the ensuing bye-election, Lowang told media persons “it is baseless and a political vendetta to tarnish my image.”
However, on involvement of underground elements in political activities of Tirap, Changlang and Longding district, he said that “no one could stop them unless the people of the area unanimously decide to act tough against them”.
However, the state government had handed over the case to National Investigation Agency (NIA) which had made a breakthrough in August last by arresting NSCN (IM) Longding-Charaideo-Mon region area commander self styled Major Anok Wangsa.
This was successful after surgical joint operation by Indian Army, Assam Rifles and Assam Police based on specific information.
Detailed search of his house located near Assam-Nagaland border was carried out leading to recovery of large cache of arms, ammunition and war like stores which included one AK-56 Rifle, many pistols and more than rupees five lakh in cash, according to the army.
