Crime Branch of Arunachal Pradesh Police starts grilling Sharjeel Imam

Itanagar: The Crime Branch sleuths of the Arunachal Pradesh Police have been interrogating JNU research scholar Sharjeel Imam, who was brought to the State capital, a senior police officer informed here on Friday.

The Arunachal Pradesh Police had on January 26 registered a case at the Crime Branch police station here in connection with the video footage of Sharjeel Imam where he was heard instigating people to cut-off Assam and northeastern States by blocking rail and road connections.

Imam was brought to the State capital on Thursday and was taken into three-day police custody for investigation of the case, DIG (Crime) VJ Chandran said.

During the preliminary interrogation, Imam admitted that he had made the speech circulating in social media, the DIG informed adding, detailed interrogation is being done by Crime Branch officials.

Imam was arrested from his hometown Jehanabad in Bihar on January 28.

Imam had done his Masters from IIT-Mumbai before joining JNU to pursue his Ph.D. in Historical Studies.

Imam’s remark during an anti-CAA rally in Shaheen Bagh in New Delhi sparked a major controversy and multiple FIRs were registered against him. Sedition charges were also slapped on him for his remarks.

Besides Itanagar, police in Assam, Manipur, and Meghalaya have also lodged FIRs against the former JNU student.
