ITANAGAR: Irked by the dilapidated condition of the hanging bridge over the Senki River, residents of the Police and Economic Statistics Colonies here have appealed to the Capital administration to immediately renovate the bridge.

The locals alleged that the administration and department concerned have hardly taken notice of the bridge which is frequently used as a shortcut by the locals, besides several students of the Dera Natung Government College.

“Several accidents have already occurred on the bridge in the past, but no one has paid heed to it despite the matter being reported to the authority concerned,” a local, who did not want to be named, said.

“The bridge connects the Police and Economic Statistics colonies having a population of around 5,000 with the highway (Gohpur Tinali). It also acts as a passage for two-wheeler riders travelling towards Gopur Tinali, KV II, VKV, Ganga Market, Bank Tinali areas and vice versa. On several occasions, the locals repaired the bridge on self-help basis but it is not possible every time,” another dweller of the Police Colony said.

The government, district administration or the department concerned should look into the matter at the earliest before there is an unfortunate incident. Moreover, the bridge acts as a lifeline for many, he said.

A few women crossing bridge said their mind has developed a certain fear psychosis that they or the bridge may fall at any given point of time. “It is difficult for us to cross the bridge and it gets worse for the school-going children and elderly people,” they pointed out.
