ANINI: On the occasion of the 53rd annual Reh festival, the Army organized a performance of Gatka and Khukri here in Dibang Valley District on February 1 and 2.

Maj. Gen. D.S. Kushwah, GOC Dao Division, part of Spear Corps, was the Guest of Honour. In his address on the occasion, the GOC conveyed his best wishes and appreciation for the local administration. The General Officer also expressed pride and happiness over the cordial relations between the Indian Army and the local administration.

Gatka is a toned-down version of the deadlier "ShastraVidya" and is a style of stick-fighting between two or more practitioners. Gatka involves a series of combat-training systems like duels and the use of weapons. The swift and precise movements of the Sikhs with their sharp weaponries create a perfect symphony between acrobatics and sword fighting which also infuse the sense of bravery and fearlessness among the audience.

The events received an overwhelming response with a large number of locals including women and children attending the festival. The local population — especially students and youths — expressed their gratitude for the conduct of the martial events during the Reh festival. They also conveyed their appreciation for the efforts taken by the Army in showcasing its prowess with elan, stated a release.
