ITANAGAR: The capital police finally arrested all gang members involved in a case relating to robbery of Rs. 11,73,000 by breaking an ATM located at Kankar Nallah near here.

Speaking to the reporters, Capital Superintendent of Police Jimmy Chiram said that police has not only solved the case of ATM theft but also prevented another ATM theft planned by the same gang at Polo Colony on August 15 or August 16.

He said that the information was revealed during the course of custodial interrogation that the gang had planned the theft and was waiting for other members to come from Mewat on August 14.

"Accordingly, on the day a trap was laid and after a brief shootout, the police managed to arrest two members of the Mewat Gang, namely Md Zaheed and Rahul Khan. One oxygen cylinder, gas cylinder, cutters etc., were also seized from the members during the course of action," he said.

Further, the team also recovered cash to the tune of Rs 3,50,000. In the coming days more arrests and recovery will follow.

Besides Md Zaheed and Rahul Khan, the police also arrested Mustafizur Rahman, Sohidul Ali, Johidul Islam, Sadik Ali and Nabir Islam, hailing from Assam, and two persons - Rukumudin and Arshad Khan - hailing from Rajasthan. Md Zaheed and Rahul Khan are from Haryana.

Chiram said that it was the same gang which robbed the ATM at Kankar Nallah on July 26 and was planning to rob the next ATM at Polo Colony. The police received a written FIR from one Biswajit Sharma, who served as a representative of NRC Corporation India Pvt Ltd , Naharlagun, and looked after all the ATMs in ICR.

He said that with no possible leads, seriousness of the issue and possible involvement of inter-State elements, a special team was constituted led by SDPO, Dy SP Dekio Gumja and others under his close supervision to solve the case.

"After detailed investigation and examination of more than 300 hours of CCTV footage from cameras installed in the ICR, electronic surveillance and collection of human intelligence, the team finally made a breakthrough when a car with partial visible number plate was found leaving the scene," he said, adding that the vehicle was identified as one Hyundai i10 Nios car with registration number AS-07-S-3611.

Chiram informed that the police arrested the car owner Mustafizur Rahman from Geku in the Upper Siang district on August 6. Subsequently, the team went on to arrest four more people - Sohidul Ali, Johidul Islam, Sadik Ali and Nabir Islam - from various places in Assam in connection to the robbery case.

"Further, the police went on to arrest Rukumudin and Arshad Khan from Ganga village on the same day. The entire arrest would have not been easy without the help of OC PS Laluk and IC OP Nowboicha," he added.
