SHILLONG: The Khasi Jaintia National Union (KJNU) has filed an FIR against the alleged illegal collection of money at the check gate located along the Jowai bypass in West Jaintia Hills district.

"The police personnel from Ummulong beat house…on the pretext of setting up a check gate at the Jowai bypass (within the area of Mukhla-Thadlaskein), has been illegally collecting money from vehicles plying on the road for the last several months now," KJNU president Niman N Shadap said in the FIR submitted to the district SP on October 7.

Shadap also alleged that some unidentified persons in civil dress are also openly collecting money from the trucks at the same check point in broad daylight.

"It is shocking to observe that the Police personnel posted at the checkpoint do not take any action against the persons collecting the money from the trucks. The silence of the Police personnel posted at the checkpoint over the illegal collection of money means consent and it implies two things: Either they are hand in gloves with them or they are not present in their places of posting and are not performing their duty," he said.

Terming the act as a disgrace to the people of the State and the Meghalaya police, the NGO leader said that the check point is not supposed to collect money from the vehicles plying on the bypass. It is meant only for the Police personnel to contain law and order and crimes within the district. Shadap also requested the SP to take action against the illegal collection of money from the trucks and book those involved under the relevant sections of the law.
