PASIGHAT: A one-day legal awareness programme was organized by the Women Against Social Evils (WASE) in collaboration with the Arunachal Pradesh State Commission for Women (APSCW) at the 2-mile Jamoh building conference hall, Pasighat to create awareness on various issues pertaining to women empowerment and various privileges under the legal system.

The programme saw the participation of APSCW chairperson Radhilu Chai Techi, vice-vhairman Heyomai Towsik, Commission member Techi Hunmai, and other dignitaries.

Addressing the gathering, chairperson Techi spoke at length on gender equality, women empowerment and the advantages of giving better education to the girl children. She reiterated that the Commission stood for the protection of the rights of all women, adding that these days more and more women were subject to a lot of exploitation and to tackle this issue, the Commission was continuously studying and looking for various methods and strategies on how to assist them further, she informed.

More women participation in all fronts, including Panchayat and legislative assembly, was essential, she said, and assured that the Commission would keep trying to promote more women in taking up entrepreneurial projects which would empower and uplift the economic condition of women of the State.

Techi stressed reformation of traditional laws and the marriage systems that do not give full justice to women and had outlived their utility. Techi urged women to uphold their healthy tradition of working hard to nurture their families.

The chairperson also presented a brief report on the role and achievements of the Commission related to domestic violence, polygamy, rape, physical and mental torture to girls/women, availability of modern maternity facilities in all districts and compulsory marriage registration. The main objective of the programme was to make women aware of their legal rights and to reach out and educate them on various aspects of the law, she said.

"Ending violence against women is everyone's business. We must give safe space to women to speak and be heard." This was stated by the East Siang SP Sumit Kr. Jha while attending the awareness programme as a resource person. He expressed hope that such programmes would help women to be more aware of the law and their rights and this in turn would serve as a protection against any violation of their rights or abuse and discrimination against them. APSCW member Techi Hunmai spoke on domestic violence and polygamy and Adv Karmo Chotten threw light on compulsory registration of marriage and property rights in the context of Arunachal Pradesh.
