Meet On Medicinal Plants Focuses On Rich Biodiversity

ITANAGAR: An awareness programme on conservation, cultivation, and sustainable utilization of different medicinal plants in the State was organized by CSIR-North East Institute of Science and Technology (CSIR-NEIST), Itanagar branch in collaboration with Ignited Minds at Mariyang of Upper Siang district on Sunday.

Around 25 participants, beneficiaries, farmers and local leaders attended the programme.

Assistant Professor of JNC, Pasighat T. Payum who coordinated the programme in his address highlighted about the ‘Ignited Minds’. He said that the Ignited Minds is an organization that organizes social activities in the district for the benefit of the people of the State.

He also informed that such activities benefit the people at the grassroot level. He requested the CSIR-NEIST to come up with more such programmes as it will help the farmers as well as the local healers to know more on the variety of medicinal plants and herbs.

Also speaking on the day, Principal Scientist and in-charge of CSIR-NEIST Dr. Chandan Tamuly delivered a talk on the importance of the medicinal plants that is popularly found in the area.

He spoke on the plant Zanthroxylun armatum and its pharmaceutical value, which is mainly used by the locals of the area. He also talked on the different varieties of Zanthroxylun armatum plants in the State. “This has high medicinal value, thus knowing much about it will not only provide income to the locals but also solve many health related issues,” he added.

The farmers and local healers from nearby villages like Damro, Millang, Bine, Dalbing attended the programme. They also shared their experience in preparation of traditional medicine for treatment of different diseases like diarrhea, bone fraction, diabetes, malaria etc. In the same programme, an anti-arthritis ointment herbal product developed by CSIR-NEIST Jorhat was distributed among the farmers under the project CSIR-AROMA MISSION.
