New Delhi: A Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) from Koloriang (Kurung Kumey district) in Arunachal Pradesh has sparked a controversy after he called menstruation a ''dirty thing'' and worthy of discussion in the assembly.
The MLA identified as Lokam Tassar, said this while participating things in discussion over the Menstruation Benefit Bill, 2017 in the state assembly, adding, ''It is the primary job of the women commission to look into such matters.''
The MLA further said that menstruating women in the Nyishi tribe stay away from the Kitchen of the house.
''Menstruation is a 'letera cheez' (dirty thing) and it should not be discuss in a holy place like the assembly. The women's commission should prepare a proper report and present it,'' he said.
''In our Nyishi tribe, the women have to sleep away from their home and remain away from the Kitchen during their menstruation period and be under restrictions,'' Tassar added.
Interestingly, another BJP legislator, Tana Hali Tara also cited a Nyishi custom that barred women during the menstruation from having meals with men.
''Leave may be acceptable in Bihar or Kerala bit not in our place,'' he added.
The Minister for Women and Child Development, Alo Libang termed the proposed bill as "logical and concerning" but should be discussed with women's organisations and the State women's panel first as their inputs would be apt.
However, the proposal was withdrawn when the Minister assured to explore ways of providing relief or special facilities to women who undergo pain and discomfort during their periods.
