Itanagar: Appreciating the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) for linking picturesque Damin, about 100-km from Koloriang in Kurung Kumey district, recently, MLA Lokam Tassar has exhorted Project Arunank to speed up construction of the 38-km road from Huri village to Tapuk along the Indo-Tibet border.

The Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) guarding the border faces a tough time in transporting men and materials to their station at Tapa as the last motorable road is up to Huri, 5 km from Damin, Tassar said.

“Road connectivity holds the key to the socio-economic development of the people in this landlocked state,” he said.

The 28-km road up to Damin from Koloriang was made motorable by the BRO in November last, he said, adding further construction up to Tapuk is more important.

One of the remotest circle headquarters of the State for which the locals used to conduct arduous foot trekking to reach Damin till 2018, the road up to 30-km point was made trafficable from Bodh tri-junction near Sarli, he said.

It would be worth mentioning here that during his first tenure as MLA, Tassar had drawn the attention of the State Assembly that Kurung Kumey had the singular distinction of having the State’s 22 unconnected circles, namely Damin, Pip-Sorang, Tali, Parsi-Parlo, Chambang, Gangte, Tarak and Passang. About 50,000 of the district’s total 94,000 population used to live in those circles then.

Porter tracks only provide a link in Kuru and Kumey valleys, which have the Jumu and Mukpa passes, 80-km and 130-km from Sarli circle respectively; Lutin, Chimpongl, and Dharmu passes under Damin (Huri) circle for the people, the ITBP and paramilitary forces to move to guard the border, the MLA had said.

“It takes four days’ trekking from Damin, nestled in the lap of unspoiled nature, to reach district headquarters Koloriang, according to Block Development Officer (BDO) Lokam Kani, who returned from Damin after a 17-day tour to every village to assess the situation.
