ITANAGAR: A ten-member women’s group from Kamle district in Arunachal Pradesh visited the National Hydro Power Corporation (NHPC) power station at Jammu and Kashmir from March 14 to 22, as part of a study tour.

The trip was arranged by NHPC’s Lower Subansiri Hydroelectric Project as part of outreach activity under Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav (AKAM) celebrations, a communiqué informed on Sunday. The women’s group visited NHPC’s 690 mw Salal, 330 mw Kishanganga, 480 mw Uri-I, and 240 mw Uri-II power stations in Jammu and Kashmir. In each power station, NHPC’s officials explained the power station in detail. The group also interacted with local residents, who shared about the overall developments brought about by NHPC in and around its project vicinity.

Cultural exchange programmes were also arranged during the visit, wherein traditional dances of Arunachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir were performed. Besides NHPC’s power stations, the group also visited some of the important tourist places in Kashmir valley and Jammu, including Dal Lake, Wuhar Lake, the Tulip Garden, Chenab Bridge (the world’s highest rail bridge), etc.

During the stay in New Delhi, the group visited some of the historical monuments, including Qutub Minar, the Indian Gate, and the Red Fort. Nido Ania, a member of the visiting group, said that they were overwhelmed by visiting the power stations and equally happy to see the local developmental activities by those power stations. Nido Kakter, another member of the group, said that contrary to her belief, she was astonished to see that the natural beauty of the local area is very well maintained even after the commissioning of such mega power stations.

Prior to that, on reaching NHPC’s head office in Faridabad on March 14, the group had an interactive session with Director (Technical) Y K Chaubey, Director (Finance) R P Goyal, and Director (Projects) Biswajit Basu. The exposure visit was a first of its kind for most of the delegates, who were very happy and satisfied with the arrangements made at the various locations and project sites of NHPC.

The delegates got an opportunity to gain in-depth practical knowledge about how a hydroelectric power project functions and the benefits it renders to the growth of the local community, said the communiqué.
