ITANAGAR: Security forces in Arunachal Pradesh apprehended two overground workers of the pro-scribed NSCN (IM) from Changlang district in the past 48 hours, a senior police officer from the district said.

A joint team of Changlang police and Assam Rifles arrested one overground worker of the outfit from Rangkatu Tea Estate on June 21 last, Changlang SP Mihin Gambo informed on Wednesday.

The arrested sympathizer was identified as Baitu Youngja of Kongsa village under Namtok Circle of the district. He was arrested when he came to collect extortion money from the manager of the garden at the behest of an NSCN-IM self-styled area commander.

In another incident, a joint team of Changlang police, 9 Assam Rifles and CRPF apprehended another overground worker of the rebel group from the same area on June 22 last.

The person, identified as Chakngam Kongkang, a resident of Phangsum village in Namtok circle, was arrested when he came to collect extortion money from the tea garden manager, the SP said.

A motorcycle and a mobile handset were seized from his possession.

The worker had carried an extortion note of self-styled area commander of the NSCN-IM demanding Rs two lakh extortion money from the tea garden.

"The desperate attempts of NSCN to collect extortion money from Changlang has been foiled by Arunachal Pradesh Police, Assam Rifles and CRPF in a joint and coordinated operation," the SP said.

A criminal case has been registered at Changlang PS against the arrested persons and further investigations are on.
