ITANAGAR: The Arunachal Pradesh Government-appointed seven-member committee, headed by Additional Deputy Commissioner Jiken Bomjen, has been conducting estimate of losses suffered by traders in a fire incident that was reported on the wee hours of October 25, reportedly reducing to ashes 700 shops of the Naharlagun daily market.

While undertaking verification in the market along with other members and police personnel to record details of fire victims on Monday, including taking pictures of owners with their trade license numbers, Bomjen informed that though initially Bazar Welfare Committee had reported damage to 700 shops, including semi-permanent ones, but the committee has received a list of 1,115 victims.

The State Government has directed to assess the losses expeditiously and submit the report for the authority to act, he said.

Chief Minister Perma Khandu, expressing his worries over the damages caused to shops by fire, had assured all kind of support to the affected people.

It may be recalled here that North-East Frontier Agency (NEFA), rechristened as Arunachal Pradesh, was granted Union Territory status in Ziro, headquarters of the Lower Subansiri district, on January 20, 1972 by then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi officially.

Then Chief Commissioner KAA Raja had become Lieutenant Governor and decided to shift the capital from Shillong to Naharlagun before it expanded to Itanagar. The devastated market developed then is the oldest one in the State.
