ROING: Encouraging the farmers to grow more organic crops, Lower Dibang Valley Deputy Commissioner Mitali Namchoom pointed out that produce from such crops fetch higher prices in the market. Such agricultural activities on a mass scale will not only be beneficial for the health of the consumers but also help to maintain the soil fertility besides maintaining a healthy ecosystem, she pointed out. The DC made this appeal while visiting the agricultural fields cultivated by the Farmers Interest Groups (FIG) under the 'Mission Organic Value Chain Development' (MOVCD) programme implemented by the Department of Agriculture on Thursday.
The DC, along with a team of officials, also inspected the 'Custom Hiring Centre' (CHC) and the office of Organic Ginger Farmer Producer Company (FPC) Ltd at Rayeng Village. She handed over a tractor and multi-utility vehicle — Tata Xenon — to the company's Managing Director (MD) Gagan Perying. The MD elaborated on the revenue generation policy of the company through the CHC and also the strategies to market their surplus ginger produce. He also informed that three trucks of their consignments have been already marketed, adding that the FPC will soon have a set of computers.
Organic farming involves higher cost as weeding and other practices have to be done manually with the involvement of more manpower instead of using pesticides. Meanwhile, the farmers expressed their gratitude towards the DC for boosting their morale to continue organic cultivation.
