Itanagar: In an unfortunate incident, a 35-year-old zoo attendant was attacked and killed by a Royal Bengal tigress in Itanagar's Biological Park in Arunachal Pradesh.
The victim has been identified as Poulash Karmakar, who hails from Dhekiajuli in Assam's Sonitpur district.
According to the zoo curator Raya Flago, the incident occurred at 2.30 PM on Tuesday when the zoo attendant entered the tigress's cage to clean the water pond.
Meanwhile taking to his Twitter handle Union Minister Kiren Rijiju wrote, "Very sad to learn that a Tiger at Itanagar Zoo killed a person named Pouluch Karmakar, who was the animal attendant at the State Biological Park at Itanagar in Arunachal Pradesh."
A case under unnatural death has been lodged at the Itanagar police station and the body of the deceased has been sent for post-mortem at the R K Mission Hospital.
Police said the body of the deceased would be handed over to his family members after the post-mortem examination.
Earlier in October 2020, a nine-month-old bear cub, reared by one Terde Yomcha of Lipu Yomcha village in West Siang district of Arunachal Pradesh was formally handed over to the authorities of Aalo forest division, who later handed over to the State zoo
Fondly called Luba, the female cub was purchased by Yomcha from someone at the tender age of less than one month at just Rs 1000.
Luba had to be handed over to State Zoo ultimately as the Wildlife Department rejected for the reason that the bear cub was reared in a homely atmosphere and had homely traits which may not allow her to survive in the jungle.
Yomcha decided to hand it over to the Forest Department as he was going out for further study at a college in Itanagar so that his emotional attachment with Luba continues and he can meet her off and on as there is none at Yomcha to take control of the animal.
