Itanagar: The Software Technology Parks of India (STPI), an organization under the Union Electronics & Information Technology (MeitY) Ministry, is aiming to create around 15,000 direct jobs through the North East BPO Promotion Scheme (NEBPS).

A budget of Rs 50 crore has been allocated to incentivize the establishment of 5,000 seats in respect of BPO/ITES operations in the region.

The scheme aims at creating an ecosystem in the North-east that would unleash development in the region. It would provide a platform to the youth of the region and curtail the migration from the region.

Further, the scheme would facilitate investment in the States and attract industry players to explore the opportunities in the area, a communique informed here on Monday.

The idea of integrating the northeastern States with the developmental process of the nation propelled the formulation of North East BPO Promotion Scheme (NEBPS). It is an endeavour under the flagship ‘Digital India’ programme.

NEBPS has been formulated with two broad objectives – Creation of employment opportunities for the local youth in the northeast region by promoting the IT/ITES Industry particularly by setting up the BPO/ITES operations and promotion of investment in IT/ITES sector in order to expand the base of IT Industry and secure balanced regional growth.

So far 16 companies have already received approval to set up BPO/ITES operations under NEBPS.

Director General of Software Technology Parks of India (STPI) Dr Omkar Rai said, “Considering the geographical location of the northeastern States, the provision of employment for the youth of the region would boost the economy and propel them towards the mainstream.”

“The government is trying to infuse development in the region. The scheme would have a domino impact as it will create an enabling environment through the creation of an ecosystem, provide jobs and bring investment in the area,” he added.

The scheme would provide financial assistance of up to 50 per cent of the total expenditure incurred on permissible items, with an upper ceiling of Rs 1 lakh per BPO/ITES seat.

Special incentives would also be provided to units that employ women, specially-abled, generate employment beyond the target and local entrepreneur.

So far, over 16 companies have received approval to set up BPO/ITES operations under NEBPS for 20 units and 2060 seats. Assam has the maximum number of 1,110 seats, followed by 450 in Nagaland, 250 seats in Manipur, 200 in Meghalaya and 50 in Arunachal Pradesh, the communique added.
