ITANAGAR: The Arunachal Pradesh State Council for Science and Technology (APSCS&T), in collaboration with the School of Energy Science and Engineering under IIT Guwahati, installed a solar-wind power plant at the Rural Technology Demonstration Centre (RTDC) Kimin in Papum Pare district on Friday. The 10 kw solar-wind hybrid plant system has a four-bladed horizontal axis wind turbine of 5 kw capacity installed at 12-metre height from ground level; another 5 kw capacity is from a solar photovoltaic array of 18 SPV panels, officials at the centre informed. The generated energy would be monitored using a hybrid charge controller and stored in a battery bank with a capacity of 24 kwh.

The advantage of a wind-solar hybrid system is that the generation is uninterrupted throughout the year without being affected by seasonal changes. The solar PV generates during the dry and clear days, while the wind turbine takes over the generation during the windy and rainy days, making the hybrid system highly reliable, they said. Such hybrid system technology with higher capacity is highly viable in the state where there is sufficient wind speed (3 to 12 m/s) availability most times of the year and solar radiation is also abundant.

It is expected that the installation of such hybrid systems throughout the state in feasible locations will help meet the target of achieving net-zero carbon emissions as per the plan of the ‘Pakke Declaration’ made by the state cabinet in 2021, the officials said. The declaration envisages a multi-sectoral approach towards low emission and climate-resilient development through five broad themes, including environment, forest, and climate change; health and well-being of all; sustainable and adaptive living; and livelihoods and opportunities. The themes would strive to support and realise a climate change-resilient and responsive Arunachal Pradesh, with its strategic domains resting on forestry, agriculture, horticulture, and water resources management, among others. APSCS&T Chairman Bamang Mangha, along with the council’s Director C. D. Mungyak, Debarshi Baruah, and a Scientific Officer from the School of Energy Science and Engineering, were among others present on the occasion.
