ITANAGAR: The capital police headed by Superintendent of Police (SP) Tumme Amo have busted a major vehicle theft gang, recovering 12 stolen SUVs comprising nine Toyota Fortuner, two Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza and a Hyundai Creta.

The SP said four people have been arrested for their alleged involvement in the vehicle theft. However, he refused to disclose the names of the vehicle owners and the name of the person who forged the papers.

The police team worked on inputs from an informer and zeroed in one of the vehicles heading towards Itanagar with fake registration number, Amo said.

Two vehicles were subsequently stopped at Hollongi check gate on January 22. The drivers arrested disclosed about the remaining stolen vehicles leading to their recovery, the SP said.

Stating that the buyers of second and third-hand vehicles with forged documents can be charged under Section 411 of IPC with a minimum of 3 years imprisonment, Amo appealed to the people in the Capital Complex not to buy used vehicles from outside the State. “If at all you are purchasing any second or third-hand vehicle, then ensure that it is verified by the police,” the SP said. He added that the case is under investigation and a case would be registered.
