ITANAGAR: The Arunachal Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) welcomed the Supreme Court's order to stay Rahul Gandhi's conviction in a defamation case by the Gujarat court, in which he has been sentenced to two years in prison. Speaking to the media, APCC President Nabam Tuki said that the SC order to stay in the case is not only a win for Congress leader Rahul Gandhi but is a win for the entire people of the country. The order of the SC indicates the democracy and secularism of the country. He said that the grant of stay by the SC means that Rahul's conviction will be kept in abeyance. Also, his disqualification from Parliament by the stay order now has no grounds for disqualification.

"Rahul Gandhi was earlier charged with defamation following his remark on the surname 'Modi' referring to Nirav and Lalit Modi in the year 2019. Rahul was campaigning for the Lok Sabha elections and at an election rally in Kolar, Karnataka," he said. Subsequently, the day after Rahul's speech, a Gujarat BJP leader and former Gujarat state minister, Purnesh Modi, filed a private complaint before the Chief Judicial Magistrate, Surat, accusing the Congress leader of having defamed everyone with the name Modi.

"Justice prevails, and the people still have hope in the democratic setup of the country. With the restoration of the case following the SC order for a stay on Rahul's case, the Congress will work with full force for greater work for the people of the country," he said. Tuki also said that with the remaining 8 months for the general assembly elections, the state Congress will ensure filing for the post of MP in the state. Likewise, the party will also be filing for the entire 60 assembly seats in the state.
