ITANAGAR: BJP Corporator Tame Phassang was elected 'unopposed' as the 'Mayor' of the Itanagar Municipal Corporation (IMC) and NPP Corporator Biri Bassang as Deputy Mayor in an election held under the supervision of the department of Town Planning & Urban Local Body (TP&ULB) at Dorjee Khandu State convention center here on Friday.

The Janata Dal-United (JDU) party who won the second-highest seats (9) in the IMC election didn't file nominations for both Mayor and Deputy Mayor.

Speaking to reporters, IMC Mayor Tame Phassang expressed his gratitude to his supporters and Chief Minister Pema Khandu for keeping faith in him. He said that, as a mayor, his priority will be the development of sector road connectivity, beautification of State capital and maintaining law & order in the Itanagar Capital Region (ICR).

"To maintain law and order and also to keep the city clean, I alone can't make it possible. Therefore, I request the people of ICR to support the movement to make the State capital the most spectacular State capital in terms of road connectivity, beautification etc, in the country," he said.

He also informed that the BJP could form the urban local body government because of the support of NPP which is an alliance of North East Democratic Alliance (NEDA).

Phassang said that the entire 20 Corporators of IMC should work unitedly for the overall development of IMC jurisdiction and the State as a whole, irrespective of party affiliation, caste, creed, religion and area.

When asked about his preparation for the IMC and Smart City Projects, Phassang said, "Law & order, sanitation, proper roads, and all the basic amenities would be the top priority.

"We won't tolerate any kind of lackadaisical attitude in maintaining law & order as well as in any developmental works," he said, adding that all the pending projects under Smart City projects will be dealt properly so that maximum benefits and literal work would be executed in the ground.

He further appealed to the people under IMC and State to extend all possible support to the team IMC in making the State capital as one of the best capitals in the country.

Earlier, Director of TP& ULB Likha Suraj administered the 'oath of office' to the 20 elected Corporators from different political parties.

Itanagar MLA Techi Kaso, IMC Commissioner Cheechung Chukhu, and other officials from IMC and Department of Town Planning & ULB attended the event.
