Tawang district in Arunachal Pradesh gears up for Feb 27 Lumla bye-poll

ITANAGAR: The Tawang district in Arunachal Pradesh is gearing up for the bye-election to the Lumla Assembly seat on February 27 next, with the district election officer (DEO) Kesang Ngurup Damo on Monday calling a meeting with district units of all political parties.

Speaking on the occasion, the DEO informed that preparations for the bye-poll are going on in war footing and he requested all the political parties not to violate the Model Code of Conduct and election guidelines for free and fair conduct of polling.

"As per Election Commission of India (ECI) direction, we have already created static surveillance team and video surveillance teams", he said and added that to make elections process easier, the Lumla area has been sub-divided into ten sectors.

Returning officer RD, Thungon while speaking on the occasion, said that expenditure during the elections is to be maintained properly and should not beyond the prescribed limit. He informed that all the election-related complaints are to be filed through C-Vigil and all the nominations will be done offline in RO office and permission for election-related works need to be applied through the Suvidha app.

The election office of Tawang has proposed three all-women polling stations in the ensuing bye-election.

Tawang SP Bomge Kamduk appealed to all the political parties to help the police in maintaining peace.

The People's Party of Arunachal (PPA) has already fielded a former gaon burah (village headman) Leki Norbu as its official candidate, while the ruling BJP and Opposition Congress are yet to announce the names of their candidates.

The ECI had on January 18 announced bye-election to the seat, which fall vacant after sitting BJP MLA Jambey Tashi died on November last year at the age of 48.

A Gazette Notification for the bye-poll would be issued on January 31 and the last date for filing nominations is February 7 next. While scrutiny of papers would be held on February 8, last date of withdrawal of candidature has been fixed on February 10. The counting of votes would take place on March 02.

A total of 9,169 electors, including 4,712 women, would cast their votes in 33 polling booths of the constituency situated at the Indo-China border.
