Tawang Marathon 2023: A High-Altitude Adventure in India's Northeast

ITANAGAR: In a groundbreaking collaboration, the Indian Army and the Arunachal Pradesh State Government are co-hosting the inaugural Tawang Marathon, scheduled for October 1, 2023. This event marks a significant milestone as it is the first time a marathon of such magnitude will grace this pristine region of the country.

The Tawang Marathon promises an exceptional experience, set against the breathtaking backdrop of Tawang's average elevation of 10,000 feet above sea level. This unique terrain offers participants an extraordinary opportunity to engage in what is arguably one of the most demanding high-altitude runs in India.

One of the primary objectives behind this event is to firmly establish Tawang as a destination for adventure sports and marathons, thereby giving a substantial boost to tourism in the region. The event aims to draw not only avid marathon enthusiasts from all corners of the country but also the active participation of the Indian Army, Indian Navy, Indian Air Force, and major Central Armed Police Forces like the ITBP and SSB, who will be fielding formidable teams.

The Tawang Marathon will feature multiple categories, including the full Marathon, Half-Marathon, as well as 10 km and 5 km races. This diverse range of races ensures that participants of varying skill levels and fitness can take part and be part of this historic event.

Chief Minister Pema Khandu, a staunch supporter of this marathon, demonstrated his commitment by being the first individual to register for the event. His endorsement underscores the importance of this event for the state and its potential to transform Tawang into a hub for adventure tourism.
