ROING: The department of Krishi Vigyan Kendra organized a nutrition programme on distribution of home-made millet based food products to school children and farm women as a part of International Year of Mil-lets. 50 children and 10 farmers and farm women benefited from the programme. Millets are nutri-cereals which are highly nutritious and are rich in vitamins and minerals like Calcium, Phosphorous, Potassium ,fibre, iron and antiox-idents.
Finger Millets (Ragi) and Foxtail Millets are abundantly grown in some districts of the State. Inclusion of Millet products along with regular school nutrition programme can reduce malnourishment in children under 10 years of age by enhancing their nutritional requirements.
Different types of Millet products were provided to the children along with their midday meal. Nanang Tamut (Subject Matter Specialist,Home Science) informed that the recipe that most attracted the children was ragi malt, which is prepared with sprouted ragi flour.
Saplings of finger millets (Ragi), Jowar(Sorgum), Foxtail Millet and Jobs Tear (Adaly Millet) of Indigenous varie-ty were provided by Senior Scientist and Head of KVK to School Head Master Akadar Borang, in order to expose the children to millets.
