ITANAGAR: A Continuing Medical Education (CME) on Cancer Cervix Screening and HPV Vaccination was held at the Tomo Riba Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (TRIHMS) at Naharlagun, where around 40 gynaecologists from across the state took part.

Renowned gynaecologists from India, including Professor Neerja Bhatla from AIIMS, New Delhi, Professor Bhagyalaxmi Nayak from Cuttack, and Dr. Upasana Baruah, Associate Professor from B Barooah Cancer Institute in Guwahati, attended the function as resource persons. Gracing the event, Capital DC Talo Potom suggested cervical cancer screening of all the females of the state capital and Papumpare district in view of the very high incidence of cervical cancer. The DC assured that it would provide all kinds of logistical support in the endeavour.

TRIHMS Director Dr. Moji Jini said that such CME and workshops should be conducted more frequently so that the doctors could share, learn, and refresh their knowledge and keep themselves updated with the latest advances in the medical field. Professor Neeraj Bhatla from AIIMS briefed about the latest cancer cervix screening guidelines and also highlighted the HPV vaccination. She strongly advocated that all girls between the ages of 9 and 20 receive at least one dose of the HPV vaccine. Dr. Todak Taba, a gynaecologist from TRIHMS, briefed us through a PowerPoint presentation about the cancer cervix burden in the Northeast region. He highlighted that, as per statistics, Papumpare district of Arunachal Pradesh has the highest incidence of cervical cancer in the country, along with Pasighat in East Siang district, which also has a high rate of incidence of the disease.

A technical session was also held on colposcopy by Dr. Upasana Baruah and on ablation and excisional procedures by Professor Bhagyalaxmi Nayak. The two-day programme also witnessed an interactive session on cancer cervix screening guidelines and a workshop on colposcopy. Altogether, 16 patients were screened by colposcopy, out of whom seven were treated with thermal ablation, as a press release informed here on Sunday.
