Will discuss menstrual leave issue: Libang

Itanagar: Arunachal Pradesh Social Welfare, Women & Child Development Minister Alo Libang on Friday assured to discuss with various women organizations of the State before taking a decision on granting one-day leave to working women and girl students during the first day of their menstrual period.

Responding to a Private Member's resolution brought in the Legislative Assembly by Congress legislator Ninong Ering, Libang said that the Women and Child Development Department in coordination with the Health and Education Department would discuss the matter with the Arunachal Pradesh State Commission for Women (APSCW) and other women organizations, besides the women legislators, before arriving at a decision.

Moving the resolution, Ering pointed out that in countries like Italy and Japan and even the Indian States of Kerala and Bihar are providing the facility to women and girl students."It is very annoying and disturbing for the women and girls to work, especially on the first day. If they are granted one-day leave of absence, they will be more dedicated and purposeful in discharging their duties,' Ering pointed out.

Referring to the thumping majority of BJP in four States of Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Goa and Manipur in the just-concluded Assembly polls, Ering reasoned that it was because of women empowerment and various facilities being provided by the Union Government.

In response, the minister informed that the State Government, too, provides various facilities to the women folk for their welfare through various Central and State schemes."There are divergent views among the women on the issue as many did not want to disclose the matter with others. We will discuss the issue elaborately with the women organizations and others before taking a decision," Libang said and requested Ering to withdraw the resolution.

Ering withdrew the resolution before the House was adjourned for the day.
