ITANAGAR: A woman drug peddler of East Siang district in Arunachal Pradesh has been arrested from her residence at Jelom village under Jonai police station in Assam’s Dhemaji district after a tip-off from the Women Against Social Evils (WASE).
Lengri Buri, whose real name is Miti Moyong, was arrested along with her accomplice and husband Mente Pait on Friday after Ruksin police along with their Jonai counterparts laid a trap for them.
WASE members also accompanied the police. The duo is now in Jonai Police Station, police informed here on Sunday.
Buri is the most dreaded drug peddler of East Siang district, the police said.
She along with her husband was caught red-handed selling 5 grams of brown sugar worth Rs 5,000 to a 16-year-old boy. The arrests were made after the boy agreed to help them track down the drug peddlers.
According to WASE general secretary Joya Tasung Moyong, the boy had been undergoing counseling with them on the request of his father.
“It was during counseling that we got to know about the source from whom he was buying the drugs. He came to us requesting to take him to a rehabilitation center and also agreed to help arrest her. Most of the drug addicts in Pasighat buy from Lengri Buri,” she informed.
Joya also shared that WASE members had earlier requested her not to continue with her drug trade.
The WASE general secretary said that most of the drug addicts ultimately become drug peddlers to fulfill their needs.
“During counseling we came to know that the boys are even offered motorbikes in exchange of peddling drugs for these drug mafias,” she informed.
“Many youths have become drug addicts,” she lamented, adding some of them are in the 13-14 year age group.
