GUWAHATI: Amazon India on Wednesday informed that they have received registrations from more than 9,000 sellers from the Northeast region. These sellers are doing business on Amazon's digital platform. 

The company has renounced 50 per cent of the selling fee during the festive season as a measure to attract more traders from the region. 

The Director (Director External Fulfilment) of Amazon India, Kshitij Jain, stated that the company will carry forward their investments to facilitate the empowerment of sellers to level up their business, and cater to customers in all locations of India and the World with the use of e-commerce. 

"Over 9,000 sellers from the Northeastern region are looking forward to benefit from this festive season and will showcase authentic and wide range of products, including raw honey, Santipuri Bengal cotton handloom sarees, handmade wicker accessories and grass and bamboo items," he said.

The company is offering a 50 per cent waiver on referral fees for sellers registering newly on Amazon.in from August 28 to October 26 as part of this exercise. According to Jain this move will help the new sellers kick-start their journey. 

The Director explained at a press conference that this fee is paid by all sellers for selling their products on Amazon India and it is a percentage of the total sales price that a buyer pays. 

Amazon has partnered with some government bodies like Tribal Cooperative Marketing Development Federation of India Ltd (TRIFED), North Eastern Handicrafts and Handloom Development Corp (NEHHDC) and Manipur Handloom & Handicrafts Development Corp Ltd (MHHDCL), as a measure to support artisans and weavers. 

More than 3.5 lakh artisans and weavers have been empowered by the company through these initiatives. 

Jain also added that more than five lakh women entrepreneurs gained benefits from the Amazon Saheli programme. Under this programme, the company is tied up with various government bodies and NGOs. 

According to the director, Amazon launched the Spotlight Northeast storefront last year, which was designed to boost the local economy, create jobs, accelerate financial inclusion and empower women across the eight northeastern states.
