Assam and Meghalaya Received Excessive Rains in March

GUWAHATI: As some parts of Assam face severe rains and thunderstorms, the Indian Meteorological Department has mentioned that Assam and Meghalaya had excessive rains in the month of March while the rest of the states have seen a deficient in the rains when compared with the previous trends except for Nagaland.

As per the reports published by the Indian Meteorological Department, Meghalaya received a total of 125 mm of rainfall in the current month, which is about 153% above the usual number. Assam recorded more than 75 mm which is also 43% above the normal level. Arunachal Pradesh received 81 mm of rainfall in March, which is 40% below the expected.

Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura received 27, 28 and 33 mm of rain, which remains 34%, 39% and 23% below the expected levels respectively. Nagaland received rains as per the prevalent trends.

The deputy director general of meteorology at the Regional Meteorological Centre in Guwahati mentioned the chances of scattered rainfall to thunderstorms and lighting in the entire northeastern part of the country. And the chances of isolated heavy rains have also been mentioned over Assam, Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh till Tuesday.

The Indian Meteorology Department has also predicted a drop in the rainfalls from Wednesday as the cyclonic circulation over the Eastern part of Bengal loses power. Monsoons are expected to enter the state of Assam in April-May and continue till October. The time is almost similar for the other Northeastern states as well. The state of Assam recorded comparatively less rainfall in the year 2021 while it received comparatively excess rainfall in the year 2022.

After the Assam district of Dibrugarh, a powerful storm tore through the Tinsukia area on Monday night, causing damage to a number of dwellings. A source claims that there was extensive storm damage throughout the district, including uprooted and fallen trees on power lines that caused many hours of power outages. A tree in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office was also uprooted.
