Guwahati: A joint team of park rangers and Centre for Wildlife Rehabilitation and Conservation (CWRC) on Saturday rescued a one-year-old female rhino calf near the Dahgaon village in Assam.

As per reports, the female rhino calf was found stuck in a pool of mud created by the monsoon flood in Assam.

The rescued calf is presently under observation at the CWRC in the park, a wildlife care facility of Assam Forest Department and Wildlife Trust of India.

As per reports, the forest officials will now try to locate the calf's missing mother. Drones shall also be used to scout the area for the mother.

In a similar incident on August 2, a 3-day old rhino calf was rescued by the park rangers. Although a search is on to locate the mother, the search has met with no major success.

Floods have this year caused extensive damage in the Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve and the surrounding areas; at one point, almost the entirety of the National Park had been submerged underneath floodwaters.

The flood has so far has claimed the lives of 153 wild animals. 178 others, including the female rhino calf, were successfully rescued by the park authorities.

Floods cause immense disruptions to the lives of the animals in the renowned sanctuary as they scramble to higher ground to escape the wrath of the deluge. Many animals, in their attempt to evade the flood, end up straying close to human habitat.

Several venture onto the National Highway that adjacent to the park while attempting to reach the hills of the neighboring Karbi Anglong district. Each year, several of these animals are hit by passing vehicles.
