GUWAHATI: In a proud moment for Assam, ten personnel of the Fire & Emergency Service of the state have been selected for the Bronze disc of DG FS, CD & HG (Directorate General Fire Service, Civil Defence and Home Guards) under the Union Home Ministry.

The Fire & Emergency Service personnel from Assam are also named for the commendation certificate by the DG FS, CD & HG for their outstanding service to the state and its people.

On Tuesday 12 April, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) of the Indian Government announced the 10 selected names of service personnel for the honour in consideration of their remarkable service.

The Home Ministry wrote a letter to the Directorate of Fire Service of Assam informing about its approval of the Bronze Disc of DG-FS, CD and HG and commendation certificate to the 10 officials.

The personnel who are chosen for the honour are Divisional Officer Ghanashyam Choudhury, Deputy Director Jayshree Khersa, Emergency Rescuer Devison Chutia and Sub- officers Anup Kumar Gayan, Prasanna Deka and Dilip Urang.

The posthumous award for commendable service in Fire Services, Civil Defence and Home Guards goes to Leading Fireman Amulya Chandra Kalita, Station Officer Jugal Chandra Payang and Sub-Officer Ganjendra Nath Das.

According to reports, all the three persons selected for the posthumous award died after they got infected with the deadly COVID-19 while they were on duty.

It is informed that the service personnel will be conferred with the national awards during the occasion of National Fire Service Week which is observed every year from 14 April to 20 April.

The National Fire Service Week is celebrated across the country to pay tribute to the brave hearts in fire service who sacrifice their lives in the explosion at the Bombay docks on 14 April 1944.

The historic explosion took place when the British freighter SS Fort Stikine with a mixed cargo of cotton bales, ammunition and gold was destroyed after it caught fire.

Following the incident, at least 66 firefighters on duty lost their lives and around 800 people residing near the area died.
