GUWAHATI: The National Medical Commission (NMC) has sent a letter of intent to the Dean of the Nalbari Medical College, stating that NMC has recognised the Nalbari Medical College and given the college permission to admit 100 MBBS students.
"In view of the aforementioned permission of 100 MBBS seats, the Commission has decided to acquire undertaking or essential papers for the granting of a letter of approval for the starting or increasing of seats for the academic year 2023–24," the letter added.
"According to National Medical Commission standards, the applicant must supply all necessary infrastructure, including teaching and non-teaching employees, buildings, equipment, and hospital facilities."
“Before the Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB) has given its formal consent, no student should be admitted to the aforementioned courses”, the letter went on to say.
Nagaon Medical College had previously received a letter of intent from NMC for 100 MBBS seats, and NMC had authorized those seats. Himanta Biswa Sarma, the Chief Minister of Assam, also tweeted about this.
"Another significant step has been taken! I'm happy to report that the National Medical Commission has granted Nalbari Medical College recognition and permission to admit 100 MBBS students. With the establishment of four new medical colleges in just one year, Assam has achieved a historic feat!", the tweet read.
The NMC approved the medical college, making it the second in 2023 and the eleventh in Assam overall. With this, there are now 1,400 MBBS seats available in the state as a whole.
Himanta Biswa Sarma, the chief minister of Assam, tweeted the news and added, "A shot in the arm! Our efforts to enhance healthcare would be aided by the Letter of Intent provided by NMC IND to Nagaon Medical College for 100 MBBS seats. It is now the second medical college this year after Kokrajhar Medical College to acquire a letter of intent, making it the 11th in the state.”
