DHUBRI: Around 100 tarpaulins were distributed among homeless destitutes living on the bank of Gadadhar River by Dhubri Red Cross Society at a simple function held in Ward No 2 of Gauripur town in Dhubri district recently.

Dhubri Red Cross Society surveyed the area along the bank of Gadadhar River flowing by Gauripur town and found that hundreds of people spent the nights by covering only their heads during the recent incessant and torrential rain. The Dhubri Red Cross Society selected 100 poorest of poor people having hardly any roof over their head.

Speaking in the meeting as the chief guest, Dhubri Superintendent of Police Anand Mishra lauded the welfare activities and initiative of Dhubri Red Cross Society in the recent months. "I have observed and participated in some of programmes organized by Dhubri Red Cross Society and found that extremely good work was being done by them for the well-being of poor people. I hope similar socio-welfare works will be rendered in the days to come," Mishra said.

Addressing the meeting, secretary of the Dhubri Red Cross Society, Rajib Sarma said that though there were many needy and homeless people living on the bank of Gadadhar River, the Dhubri Red Cross Society had to select only 100 out of them.

"However, in the next round of distribution of tarpaulins, we will definitely include the people left out this time," Sarma added. Earlier in July this year, tarpaulins were distributed in slums area of Dhubri at Shivam Dharmashala (Nuniapatty).
