JAGUN/DIGBOI: Amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, a grenade explosion created sensation in Margherita subdivision in Tinsukia district of Upper Assam. A 12-year old boy died in a grenade explosion under Lekhapani police station in Jagun here on Tuesday morning.

According to sources, the deceased was identified as Suraj Hajong (12), son of Sukumar Hajong of Jagun Kotha Adarsha village. The incident took place on Tuesday morning around 8:15 am when Suraj was going for a swim near Buridihing River with his brother Suman Hajong. Suddenly there was a grenade explosion which led to his death.

This explosion led to a situation of panic in the area and army personnel informed that they had launched an investigation into the matter. What exactly caused the blast is yet to be ascertained officially till filing of the report.

The Superintendent of Police of Tinsukia, Vaibhav Nimbalkar and the officials of other security agencies from neighbouring Lakhapani and Bordumsa reached the place and took stock of the happenings.

Notably, the incident occurred a day after new Chief Minister of the State, Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma appealed to the banned ULFA (I) to shun the path of violence and join the mainstream of the society.

Significantly, a hardcore NSCN (IM) cadre, identified as Nongpion Singoho, was also apprehended earlier on Sunday by Jairampur based 19 Assam Rifles from along the Nampong-Myanmer border around 30 kilometers from Jagun. Jagun being a small and the last town of Tinsukia district, shares border with the neighbouring Arunachal Pradesh's vulnerable places like Nampong, Jairampur, Kharsang and Miao close to the Myanmar border. Movement of anti-social elements from this corridor is not a new phenomenon.
