13 Year Old Assam Boy Selected For National Bravery Award 2023

GUWAHATI: Bravery doesn't revolve around age, proves a 13 year old from Assam. Uttam Tanti of Assam's Dhekiajuli district has been selected for the National Bravery Award 2023. 

The 13 year old boy with all his courage, rescued a woman and her son during flood. In a massive flood of 2019, Uttam Tanti saved a 5 year old boy along with a woman who were in the verge of losing their lives. 

Uttam was only 10 years old when the incident took place. The episode took place as both the mother and her son were carried away by the rising river current. In a blink of an eye, the brave minor jumped into the rising flood and saved them.

Uttam Tanti, with his quick reflexes, managed to bring the duo back to the banks by pulling them out of the death. The 13 year old will be presented the National Bravery Award 2023 on the occasion of Republic Day, 26th of January. 

It is worth mentioning that, Uttam is trained swimmer and he started learning swimming since the age of 5. He is currently pursuing his education in 8th standard. National Bravery Awards are conferred to minors of less than 18 years of age. 

The recognition is done every year, and the award is given to 25 children for their unparalleled acts of bravery and courage keeping aside all odds. The awards are presented at an well organised event, by the government of India and Indian Council for Child Welfare. 

The award giving ceremony is usually done by the prime minister of India on Republic Day's eve. Before giving away the recognitions, the President hosts a feast for all the minor. The children interacts and share their feelings and experiences with the media during this phase. 

Furthermore, the awardees take part in the Republic Day's parade which takes place at Rajpath, New Delhi. 

The National Bravery Award arrived on 2nd October, 1957, the day India's first prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru witnessed a situation. A 14 hear old scout boy with his quick reflexes saved the lives of hundreds of people trapped in a fire. The episode inspired Nehru to bring forth an award to honour courageous children from all corners of India. 

In 2022, a 12 year old boy from Telangana was presented the award for saving a YouTuber from the river Yamuna during earthquake.
