GOLAGHAT: The 142 Battalion, CRPF observed the Police Commemoration Day on Wednesday at the Battalion Headquarter, Jonaki Nagar, Golaghat. Police Commemoration Day commemorates the sacrifice of 10 CRPF jawans while defending the borders with China in 1959. On October 21, 1959, Chinese Army personnel opened fire and threw grenades at the police party of 20 personnel. Ten of them died, seven were taken prisoners by the Chinese and the remaining managed to escape. The small contingent of CRPF personnel displayed unparallel bravery.

The Annual Conference of Inspectors General of Police of States and Union Territories held in January 1960 decided that October 21 would be observed as Commemoration Day in all police lines throughout India to mark the memory of these gallant personnel. During the occasion of Police Commemoration Day, Bharat Kumar Vaishanv, Commandant, took guard salute at the ceremonial function. Ratul Das, Second-in-Command, Mukesh PP, Assistant Commandant, were also present.
